Supporting Your Teen With Acne Prone Skin

Take Your Teens Concerns Seriously

One of the best things you can do for your teen with acne is to take his or her concerns seriously. There is nothing worse for your child then to feel like you are not taking him or her seriously, or even worse feel ridicouled.

Make it a point to talk to your child, acknowledge the acne as a problem and work with him or her on solutions to make the situation better.

Offer Support

Even if your child doesnt come to you about the acne problem, offer your support. Pick up some over the counter acne treatments at the store, show your child some recent research on the effects of nutrition and proper skin care. Together you can work on a diet and skin regimen that will hopefully start to clear up the acne.

If this doesnt work, suggest an appointment with a dermatologist with your teen and offer to tag along for the appointment.

Built Up Your Teens Self-Esteem

Teens with acne often lack self-esteem as a result of the way they see themselves and how they think others perceive them. Do what you can to build up your teens self-esteem. Even if over the counter and medical treatments fail to clear up the acne, more self-esteem will help your teen cope with the social issues acne brings about.

Start with lots of verbal praise on anything from his or her looks, to personality and of course any time your teen does something helpful for your. A few new clothes, a new haircut, or some makeup (for girls) may help as well. You feel more confident in a great outfit, dont you?

Share Your Own teen Stories

Even if you didnt suffer from acne the way your teen does, I feel sure you had your share of unpleasant or embarrassing teen memories. Share a few of these with your child. Dont be patronizing, but convey the message that he or she is not alone, that most of us had some rough spots in our teen years, but we all get over it and move on. With a little encouragement from you your teen will as well.

New Acne Products

Who suffers from acne the most? Almost anyone who has flare ups and has to deal with break out has to deal with the problem. There are products out there that will help to keep acne under control.

Companies have come up with new products that can control mild to sever acne through the use of topical retionis (Retin-A, Differin, and Tazorac). Combined with hormonal, antibiotic, or benzoyl in as little as a few weeks. The cost involved is about $70 to $160 a month.

Laser light treatment with aminolevulinic acid (ALA) is another accepted treatment for acne. In this treatment, the skin is treated with aminolevulinc acid and exposed to a sunlamp. Many people with acne who try this treatment report amazing results. The treatment removes bacteria from oil glands and helps clear the skin. The cost is somewhere between $350 to $500.

Keep in mind; any type of treatment you use depends upon your skin type. If you have oily skin, you should use a cream. If your acne flares around oily spots on your face, you need to use a gel. Also, if your skin is very sensitive, you need to choose a treatment that is not heavily concentrated. Otherwise, you may cause further flare-ups.

If the acne is not so bad, use a milder cream as a preventative measure. You must read labels carefully to apply medications to those areas that are prone to breakouts. And, if the acne is causing pain, try over the counter medications like Tylenol or Ibuprofen. Any pain should be an indication that you need to be seen by a dermatologist for further treatment.
